Lagos-Ibadan expressway contractor pleads for more time
Contractor handing road construction on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Julius Berger Construction Company has pleaded more time to enable it do a thorough job on the road.
Consequently, the contractor disclosed that the traffic hiccups on the 5 kilometre long bridge at the expressway may subsist until the end of November.
This divisional Manager, (West) of Julius Berger Construction Company, Wolfgang Loesser stated this during a joint press conference with Ogun State government yesterday.
Loesser explained that the work on the road, especially the bridge, requires due diligence in order to stand the test of time, adding that the hardship would be reduced if motorists and other road users are disciplined.
Ogun State government has however blamed the traffic situation on the road to impatience and indiscipline on the path of many road users who wouldn’t consider the ongoing repair work on the road into consideration.
The construction company said there are other major bottlenecks on the road, but that the company would do the needful to ensure that the hardship is reduced while also expecting cooperation from the road users.
He said, “First is the stage where we are now before we move to the other side coming from Lagos. So, that work will take at least, until the end of November”.
“But I also want to point out that there are many bottlenecks on the road; for example, the Ogun River base. So, we are likely to experience the same problem there where we will have several stages of traffic management. We can only do it if everybody is disciplined and care to drive safely within the construction area”.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Lekan Adegbite explained that the state government had open up an alternative route parallel to the long bridge in order to ease the movement on the long bridge.
Adegbite emphasized that government would not hesitate to invoke the appropriate section of the law to deal with any erring motorists that drives against traffic in an attempt to beat the gridlock.
He explained that the alternative route would be dedicated to smaller vehicles, while security operatives, including the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, would be available to ensure compliance by the road users.
Lamenting that miscreants have often taken advantage of the traffic build up to dispossess motorists and travellers of their valuables, the commissioner declared that enough security men have been drafted to the section of the road to ensure protection of lives and properties.
Adegbite however, explained that government has resolved to increase dedicated law and traffic enforcement personnel while the contractor is also expected to hasten work to meet up with the targeted period of completion.
