Russia Escapes Blanket Ban From Rio Olympics

Russia has escaped a total ban from the 2016 Rio Olympics following the country’s doping scandal.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the decision following a report in which Canadian law professor, Richard McLaren, said that Russia ran a state-sponsored doping programme from 2011 to 2015.
The IOC has now resolved to leave it up to individual sport’s governing bodies to decide if Russian athletes are clean and should be allowed to take part in the competition.
Participants from Russia who wish to take part in the games would have to meet strict criteria laid down by the IOC.
The Court of Arbitration had earlier rejected the athletes’ quest to compete in the Olympic Games which is expected to kick off on August 5 in Brazil.
Russia had attempted to have a ban placed on its track and field athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games overturned.
The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) found Russia to be guilty of state-sponsored doping back in November, leading to a ban from this year’s competition.

Senator Isiaka Adeleke Dies At 62

A member of the Nigerian Senate, representing Osun West Senatorial district, Isiaka Adeleke, has died at 62. A family source who spoke to Channels Television under the condition of anonymity, said Adeleke died at Biket hospital in Osogbo at 6:00am on Sunday. When his corpse was brought to his home in Ede town, the atmosphere became tense with friends and family members weeping uncontrollably. As at the time of filling the report, the body had been taken to the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo for autopsy. Mr Adeleke, who was the first governor of the state in 1992, under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was elected into the Senate in 2015 as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Passengers Accuse Dana Air Of Neglect After Port Harcourt Mishap

The passengers of the near crash landing of Dana Plane at Port Harcourt International Airport are lamenting over what they describe as utter neglect being experienced since the incident occurred. According to them, no one has come forward to explain what transpired yesterday evening or inform them about how to access their luggage. One of the passengers also informed our correspondent that contrary to reports, the plane landed normally, but could not explain what happened thereafter.
